S-Town Podcast Ch 1 + 2 - Listening Response

S-Town Ch 1 + 2

Throughout this podcast, I wondered whether or not the story was real. After a while, though, it didn't matter to me. I was intrigued by the plot and I was enveloped by the sounds. The music accompanied the dialog very well, and it often blended in so well that it snuck up on me. The pieces that were used were light and airy, giving a soft background score to the images in my head, which were generated from the dialog.

In regards to the dialog, not only were the characters well developed, but the thing that they said enhanced the images which only I could see. The characters were distinct in their accents and tones, and often quite stereotypical; the southerners had long drawls, the northern yankee from the city spoke in a more articulate manner.

The narration would periodically ebb and flow to include spoken word from the characters in a fill-in-the-blank style over the narrator's voice. This provided a very strong verbal and visual citation for the story, and it helped to break up the monotony of the narration. Created sound cues were used often, but not to the point of being cliche. There was mention of pouring something, and then the sounds of liquid being poured.

With my project, I plan on utilizing some of the techniques heard in this podcast. My idea revolves around trying to convey my thoughts with sounds (not necessarily dialog). I like the idea of breaking up what I say and interjecting with sounds of my thoughts, similar to the interjections of the characters over the narrators dialog. Depending on what results I get during the interview, I may play with the idea of creating different personas to embody certain types of thoughts that I have.
