Reading Response: Montage is Conflict
Response to Sergei Eisenstein's Montage is Conflict
This article aimed to discuss how to characterize montage, and expand the idea that conflict or collision is what makes montage, not the linkage of cells or frames. Eisenstein, and myself included, reside on the side which views montage as being born from conflict. Instead of simply being a linkage of cells, creating a continuous flow of thought, montage is born in the idea of a collision of ideas. Even a single cell must relate to the conflict of the montage as a whole.
